Atelier RLF

Choosing a relief painting

A relief painting brings not only colour but also texture and depth to an interior. At Atelier RLF, Lotte and Fenne make handcrafted works in which calm shades, organic forms and a tactile surface come together.

Relief, light and calm colours give a wall its own character.

What makes a relief painting different?

In a flat painting, depth comes mainly from colour and perspective. A relief painting also has physical changes in surface height. Raised lines and built-up layers catch the light, creating small shadows. The same composition can therefore look different throughout the day.

Texture is part of the artwork. Up close, you see the movement of the layers; from further away, you read the shapes and rhythm of the composition. Even a calm colour can create a distinctive, lively impression.

A single painting or a diptych?

A single painting creates one focal point on the wall. A diptych consists of two matching panels, giving the composition a wider rhythm that can complement the proportions of a wall or piece of furniture.

Terra and Selene are single relief paintings measuring 60 x 80 cm. Terra combines warm earth tones with sand and ivory. Selene has a soft ivory shade and rhythmic arches. Alba and Marea are diptychs measuring 120 x 90 cm: Alba has soft, organic relief lines; Marea brings movement through wavelike layers in sand, taupe and ivory. Check each product page for current prices and availability.

How to choose a work for your space

Start with the available wall space. Do not judge the dimensions only on a screen: mark them on the wall with paper or removable tape. This helps you see the proportions in relation to a sofa, sideboard or table and how much open space will remain around the artwork.

Also consider the light. Light from the side can emphasise the texture. Look at how the colours relate to the materials and shades already in the room. They do not all need to match: a subtle difference in texture or tone can bring an interior into balance.

Frequently asked questions about relief paintings

What is a relief painting?

A relief painting is an artwork with a tactile raised surface. Forms and layers stand above the base. Light and shadow make the texture visible and give the work depth.

What is the difference between a single painting and a diptych?

A single painting consists of one panel. A diptych consists of two matching panels that form one composition. Atelier RLF offers both; each product page lists its size and price.

Who makes the relief paintings at Atelier RLF?

Atelier RLF was founded by Lotte and Fenne, two sisters with a shared love of interiors and art. They make the relief works by hand, with attention to form, texture and calm colours.

How do I choose a relief painting for my interior?

Consider colour, texture, available wall space and the light in your room. A single work creates one focal point; a diptych adds rhythm across two panels. Mark the dimensions on your wall and contact Atelier RLF if you would like advice.
